Murrayfield is an area in the west end of Edinburgh, known mostly for its international rugby stadium. The name Murrayfield comes from Archibald Murray, owner of the estate in the 1700s, who named the area after himself.
BT Murrayfield Stadium
The home of Scottish Rugby Union, Murrayfield is the largest stadium in Scotland, with a capacity of 67,144. It is predominantly a sports stadium, but is also a popular venue for large music gigs and has seen the likes of The Rollings Stones, Bon Jovi and Madonna take to the stage. Guided tours of the stadium, which should be booked in advance, are a fantastic treat for rugby fans – a chance to go behind the scenes, learn about the history of Scottish Rugby and see special memorabilia including the Calcutta Cup.
Murrayfield Ice Rink
This is Scotland’s national ice arena, with public skating available every day of the week, including leisure, disco and family sessions. There’s a Learn To Skate programme, plus figure skating and ice hockey clubs. Check the website for skating sessions and prices.
Football stadium Tynecastle is a short walk from Murrayfield. This is the home ground to Heart of Midlothian Football Club, and is a great day out for Hearts fans. As well as regular football matches and stadium tours, there is a free-to-visit museum and memorial garden.
Gorgie City Farm
Close by in Gorgie, there’s a charity-run city farm, perfect for families with young children. Their aim is to educate people in the city about farming and food production. There are many farm animals to see including sheep, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks and cattle. Entry is free but donations are welcomed.
If you’re looking for more exotic animals, Edinburgh Zoo is only a five minute drive from Murrayfield. Highlights include Penguin Rock, the Bodungo Trail and the UK’s only Giant Pandas. See the zoo website for opening times, ticket prices and more information.
