Spring is almost upon us, the snowdrops are in bloom and before long schools will be out. So are you ready for breaktime yet? Spring holidays in Edinburgh can be one of the loveliest times of the year. At the Dunstane, we’re ideally placed for exploring the city, so if you’re planning your spring holidays in Edinburgh, have a look at some of the things you could enjoy while you’re here.
The Royal Yacht Britannia
The Royal Family once called Britannia their ‘floating home until she was decommissioned in 1997. Now, this Clydeside-built yacht is berthed at Ocean Terminal and you can tour it to learn about life on board, with Her Majesty the Queen, her captain, and a crew of over 220 yachtsmen. Most impressive of all is the fact that the Royal Rolls Royce was also taken along for the ride and housed in a specially built garage on deck.
Explore Greyfriar’s Kirk
You should probably be of stout heart to enter Greyfriar’s Kirk, particularly if you plan on visiting after dark. This historic graveyard is the last resting place of some of Edinburgh’s most famous citizens. It was also home to the Covenanter’s prison, a squalid cell where those who signed the infamous agreement were held until their execution.
Shop in the Grassmarket
For four centuries, the Edinburgh Grassmarket was the largest cattle market around, where beasts were traded daily and the city’s prisoners were hanged or beheaded before the crowds. Nowadays, it’s a place of celebration and gaity, where the towering townhouses are home to chintzy apartments and popular bars.
Meet and Greet at Edinburgh Zoo
Visiting a zoo isn’t just for kids, and when it comes to Edinburgh Zoo there are few reasons not to go. The penguins take themselves on a daily parade at 2:15pm to the delight of the spectators, and the endangered Siberian tigers are not to be missed. Make the visit here even more special by riding the newly-opened trams through the heart of this historic city.
