If strolling around and seeing the sights isn’t your idea of fun then there are plenty of exciting activities to do in Edinburgh. Focus your attentions on something sporty, outdoors or cultural. There are plenty of Edinburgh activities that will give you the chance to challenge yourself, introduce you to new experiences and let you enjoy the city as well.
If you’re looking for an outdoors experience then consider a cycling break. Take a ride out to the Pentland Hills, where there are plenty of paths and routes to follow along the Water of Leith. Alternatively, for a gentler sporting break consider the national game – golf. Edinburgh is home to a range of challenging and enjoyable golf courses, and the world renowned Home of Golf – St Andrews – is not far away and an absolute must for any discerning golfer’s diary.
For the more mainstream tourist, a bus tour of the city will give you the chance to spot all the big attractions whilst also learning more about the city’s history. There are also a large number of walking tours focusing on different elements of Scotland’s Capital, some with themes such as Haunted Edinburgh.
Arts and culture fans may wish to visit during Festival season in August, so they can pick and choose from the wide range of wonderful events, shows and exhibitions. For travellers visiting at other times of the year Edinburgh has a host of dedicated theatre venues, including the Traverse and the Playhouse, one of the largest theatres in the whole of the UK.

If you’re travelling as a family then Edinburgh activities for children can be easily found. You’ll definitely want to take a trip to Edinburgh Zoo as well as the Camera Obscura for a mesmerising look at Edinburgh in a new light. Children may also enjoy go-karting at XTreme Karting, or the Museum of Childhood.
