5 Places to Visit on Doors Open Day
This weekend is Doors Open Day in Edinburgh. We can’t wait to start exploring some of the city’s most fascinating buildings, all throwing their doors open for free! There are 119 properties in Edinburgh to choose from, which are usually either off-limits to the public or would charge an entry fee. From heritage sites to modern architecture, there’s so much to see. We’ve picked out five very different buildings.
BLACKFORD HILL, EH9 3HJ, SAT & SUN 10AM-5PM
This original Victorian observatory is home to some of the best telescopes in the world. A unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at a leading scientific centre. Many activities are planned, including Starlab planetarium shows and dome demonstrations. Perfect for astronomy enthusiasts aged 8 and over.
15 MANSFIELD PLACE, EH3 6BB, SAT & SUN 10AM-12PM
A stunning former church designed by famous architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and decorated with murals by Phoebe Anna Traquair in the 1890s. Guided tours will be available, plus the chance to see the headquarters of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, which are usually hidden from view.
John Knox House
43-45 HIGH STREET, EH1 1SR, SAT 10AM-6PM & SUN 12AM-6PM
One of the oldest buildings in Edinburgh, dating back to 1470. On Doors Open Day you can learn about the fascinating history of this medieval property with free access. Tickets are available now on the TracScotland website.
88 LOTHIAN ROAD, EH3 9BZ, SAT & SUN 10AM-11PM
This independent picture house is offering guided tours of their projection rooms. This is a rare glimpse into the by-gone age of traditional cinema, contrasted with modern projection techniques. Tours must be booked in advance on the Filmhouse website.
Lothian Buses Depot
55 ANNANDALE STREET, EH7 4AZ, SAT 12PM-4PM
See a display of new and vintage buses, learn about the history of the building, take a trip through the bus wash and sit in the bus driver’s seat. You can even arrive in style as Lothian Buses will be running vintage buses on the Service 16 every 10 minutes between Lothian Road and Newhaven, stopping close to the depot. A great choice for all the family.
If that doesn’t keep you busy enough, you can check out all 119 buildings on the Doors Open Day website. Have fun exploring Edinburgh’s hidden gems!
